KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Bowling Club's first business bowls league of the year wrapped up with the fifth and final week of matches played on Friday 13 March.
The club's business leagues are held three times a year and are ideal for young and old, male and female, and even people with disabilities.
The first league of the year, also known as the summer league, got under way on Valentine's Day last month and teams were divided into three sections – A, B, and C – based on their strength. Their matches would start at 16:00 or 17:00 depending on when they closed business, and would be played over 12 ends. The first four rounds' fixtures would be predetermined, while the fifth and final would be scheduled based on the rankings after the fourth round so as to give each team something to play for.
Participants took a couple of weeks to kick into gear, but once they found their feet, the social nature of the league beguiled even the grumpiest of players and all were having loads of fun. Moms, dads and children alike were all around during the five weeks of bowling, be it to take part or simply support each other as each team sought to become the best business bowls side in Knysna.
After four weeks of competition, the Coaches Roaches (from Simola) were top of Section C, Buco Bowlers were top of Section B, and ChrisCo were top of Section A. And so, on Friday 13 March, each first-placed team would play their second-placed counterparts – except Coaches Roaches, who played against third place – in the final round to determine who would be the winner of each respective division.
A scintillating final round of action ensued, and each division saw quite the shake-up in its respective top three. In Section C, Coaches Roaches held onto top spot thanks to a 46-38 win over Queens, while Builders Block finished second and Huizemark third. In Section B, Buco Bowlers also clung to top spot, beating Team Met (who ended third) 56-28 while Sea Pirates finished second. Finally, in Section A, ChrisCo fought to secure their 45-39 win over Kings who finished second while Team Plumb finished third.
The next business bowls league is expected to take place in August.
