KNYSNA NEWS - Following a triumph in their third and final group game this past weekend, the Knysna Cavaliers have progressed to the quarter-finals of the SWD Cricket T20 Competition.
The Cavaliers faced off with the Kranshoek Dolphins on Saturday 6 November in a must-win if they were to secure top spot in Group H of the competition.
They had already beaten Pirates United and Plett Pioneers the weekend before, which put them in a strong position in the group. Nonetheless, they needed to beat the men from Kranshoek to guarantee progression.
Kranshoek Cobras captain John Koopman won the toss and sent the Cavaliers in to bat first on a tough batting pitch. Koopman's decision immediately worked in his side's favour as they managed to rip through the Cavaliers' top order with some great bowling.
The group leaders were reeling at 16-6 with debutant Jaden Brotherton at the crease alongside Cavaliers veteran Francois Bonthuys. The duo managed to steer their side to a total of 78-6 by the conclusion of the 20th over, with Brotherton scoring 20* and Bonthuys 38*.
The pick of the Dolphins' bowlers was Kevin Brouers, who claimed three wickets for only six runs in his four overs.
The tough batting conditions continued into the Dolphins' batting innings and some measured bowling from the Cavaliers kept the men from Kranshoek pegged back throughout their innings. Shanwell Martin top-scored for the Dolphins with a defiant 10 runs before he was dismissed, but ultimately his side was bowled out for 41 runs. Quinton Visagie was the Cavaliers' best bowler with four wickets for eight runs in his four overs.
The win sees the Cavaliers secure top spot in the group, and therefore progress through to the quarter-finals on 20 November.
