GEORGE NEWS - George Airport’s passenger numbers showed welcome signs of growth leading into the shoulder periods of the South African summer season, with a 5% year-on-year increase for September, with over 64 400 passengers travelling through the airport.
This is just a tad more than 10% of the 600 000+ feet seen at Cape Town International Airport in the same month.
Year-to-date, George Airport has welcomed over 570 000 passengers, representing a year-on-year growth of 3% compared to 2022.
Cape Town International
Passenger growth at Cape Town International Airport continues, with domestic and international passenger terminals recording positive monthly and year-to-date increases.
The domestic terminal recorded a 24% year-on-year growth for September, with over 600 000 passengers moving through the terminal. The year-to-date domestic passenger growth (January-September) has increased to 14%, when compared to the same period in 2022, reaching a total of 4,94 million passengers.
The international terminal saw a 31% year-on-year growth in September, with over 200 000 passengers moving through the terminal. Year-to-date, the international terminal growth is at 60% when compared to 2022, with over 1,97 million two-way passengers moving through the international terminal.
Cape Town Air Access wins at Routes World 2023
Cape Town Air Access, powered by Wesgro, was named the winner of the prestigious Destination Award at Routes World 2023 by a jury of network executives from twelve global airlines.
The global route development conference took place in Istanbul, Turkey from 15 to 17 October and is considered the premier event in the industry, bringing together key stakeholders, airlines, airports and tourism authorities from around the world.
After having received the same accolade in Las Vegas in 2022, this award champions the marketing support provided by destinations to their airline partners, acknowledging tourism authorities whose marketing activities have had a real impact on airlines' future network development plans.
Being shortlisted for the award, placed the Cape Town Air Access team in esteemed company, alongside the likes of the Moroccan National Tourism Office, ProColombia, Turismo de Portugal and Visit Cyprus. However, in the end, the accolade was claimed by the Cape Town Air Access team, reaffirming their reputation as a world-class route development initiative.
New international routes
South African Airways will commence a non-stop flight between CPT and São Paulo, Brazil on 31 October, with two frequencies per week.
FlyNamibia will be operating a new route between Walvis Bay and CPT, with four flights per week, starting 27 October.
LAM Mozambiquan Airlines will commence operations between Maputo, Mozambique and CPT with three flights per week, starting on 15 November.
