NATIONAL NEWS - Residents across the Western Cape reported 2 459 cases of road damage to the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) between March and May this year using the Roads4U app, according to a written parliamentary reply.
The app enables users to submit photographs and GPS coordinates of damaged roads, helping to accelerate the identification, assessment and repair of defects across the provincial road network.
Of the nearly 2 500 cases of road damage reported on the app during this period, 675 related to Western Cape Provincial roads, constituting approximately 27% of all reports, while the remaining 73% related to other roads under the jurisdiction of authorities such as the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) or municipalities.
All reported road damages were assessed and 2 098 were attended to by the end of May, with 314 reports on Western Cape provincial roads addressed directly by the DOI and 1 784 other reports forwarded to the relevant local or national roads authorities.
During the severe weather conditions between 5 May and 13 May, 102 reports of damage to roads were reported via the app, allowing the responsible authorities to respond swiftly with repairs.
Dirk Wessels, MPP, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Infrastructure, said: “The Roads4U app, which was developed by the Provincial Department of Infrastructure, continues to prove its value by giving residents a simple and effective way to report road damages while ensuring that reports are directed to the correct roads authority.”

Wessels added: “The DA in the Western Cape encourages all residents to download and make use of the Roads4U app. With more than 9 000 users already registered, the platform is strengthening collaboration between communities and road authorities in keeping our roads well maintained. Other provinces should consider following the DA-led Western Cape Government’s lead and implement similar innovations to improve the state of their roads.”
“As this weekend is a voter registration weekend, I encourage all South Africans to register to vote DA in the Local Government Elections, so you can experience first-hand the efficient, innovative and accountable governance the DA is known for.”
