PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The international prize-winning Zolani Youth Choir is to perform in Plett, as part of the NPO Kids of Kurland School Project's fundraising drive for 2025.
The choir was started in 2012 by Odwa Mvunge to equip children from Zolani township, in the Western Cape town of Ashton, with musical skills.
It has gone from strength to strength, and was invited to take part in the International A Capella Competition in Moscow in 2024.
Grand Prix Award
One hundred and fifty choirs from around the world competed in the event, and the Zolani Youth Choir was judged the best of them all, winning the Grand Prix Award.
"Odwa (a former member of the Nelson Mandela University choir) proved to them (contestants and audiences) that your circumstances should never determine your destiny," the NPO says.
"Those who heard the choir last year will know just how talented they are, singing a diverse selection of music, such as classical, favourites, religious items and African music.
Don't miss this'
"The NPO feels extremely thrilled that the choir is prepared to come back to Plett and perform for us. Don't miss this amazing musical treat."
The Kids of Kurland School Project is a long-running NPO that pays the salaries of three extra teachers in the overcrowded classrooms at The Crags Primary, near Plett.
The choir is to perform from 20:00 on Saturday, 22 February at The White House Theatre in Plett.
Tickets, at R250 per person, are available at the Old House Shop in Plett.
'Very good cause'
"The proceeds go to a very good cause - to uplift the children of Kurland Village in The Crags," Ann Fermor, one of the founder members of the Kids of Kurland School Project, says. The Zolani Youth Choir would give a free performance at the Slops restaurant in Plett from 13:00 on Sunday 23 February, Fermor said.
The restaurant had sponsored the use of the bus that would bring the choir to Plett.
