GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - This year's City Nature Challenge (CNC) ran over four days, from 29 April to 2 May, yielding great results.
Of the 10 378 species recorded in the Garden Route District to date, 2 757 (26,69%) were recorded over the four-day period, placing the district in the 10th overall position for the documentation of species.
The number of observers for 2022 was 273, which is an increase on last year's 252.
Convener Shaun Swanepoel thanked everyone who participated in this project.
"We would like to encourage everyone who participated to continue to use the iNaturalist platform throughout the year ahead. Please carry on using the platform and encourage more people to join as we head to the 2023 City Nature Challenge. Encourage more people to join and build on our immense biodiversity wealth and knowledge."
Final tally
Out of 447 projects worldwide, the Garden Route District's final tally is as follows:
With 16 151 observations the district takes an overall 25th position in this category. A total of 2 757 species was recorded. In total, 420 people assisted with the identifications of the observations and 273 people took observations at an average of 59,16 observations per person.
"This placed us 66th standing overall in the observer category," said Swanepoel.
