KNYSNA NEWS - In the spirit of Heritage Day, SANParks took a step towards promoting cultural inclusivity and understanding within the Garden Route National Park by organising a visit to Judah Square, the largest Rastafarian community in South Africa, located in the heart of Knysna.
On 22 September, staff members from the park's three sections visited Judah Square in Knysna to immerse themselves in the vibrant and rich Rastafarian culture with the goal of fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between SANParks staff and the Rastafarian community and promoting a spirit of inclusivity and appreciation for all cultures.
The SANParks staff were warmly greeted by members of the Rastafarian community and the day unfolded with a series of engaging activities and discussions, where the park staff learned about the Rastafarian culture, its history, beliefs and practices.
The Rastafarian way of life highly values natural living, and the community is guided by principles of peace, love and unity.
They have a deep connection to nature and a reverence for the environment, that align with SANParks' commitment to conservation and sustainability.
The visit offered a platform for open dialogue and cultural exchange, where questions were asked and stories were shared. The SANParks staff realised the power of understanding and respect, breaking down barriers and nurturing a sense of unity among diverse communities.
Brother Maxi, father of the Rastafarian community, was one of the programme directors and welcomed all attendees.
