KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna mayoral committee member for community services, PA representative Walied Grootboom, was arrested in the Eastern Cape on Friday 11 April for the alleged assault on fellow PA Eastern Cape provincial member Tiphany Stacey Harmse.
The incident was highlighted in a long Facebook video posted by PA leader Gayton Mckenzie, who denounced gender-based violence.
McKenzie said this video of the incident, which occurred in Harmse’s residence, had shocked him.
McKenzie posted that Harmse had told him Groot boom had spat in her face and that she spat back into his face.
After an altercation, police were called and broke into Harmse’s residence.
The two had been in a relationship but recently broke up.
McKenzie said he had recruited Grootboom into the PA and treated him like a son.
He said he would be taking serious action against Grootboom and said he had to “pay the ultimate price” and would be removed from his position.
“But he needs help. He is sick. I will speak to him and get him help,” said McKenzie.
Before being appointed as a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Council, Harmse served for a brief period as a PA councillor in the Bitou municipality.
An inquiry has been sent to the police.
