KNYSNA NEWS - The bail application of Gevandre Jantjies (30), who is accused of the murder of Knysna SuperSpar employee Marcia Kleinbooi (45), was postponed for the third time in the Knysna Magistrate's Court due to the nationwide lockdown.
The civil movement Knysna United has joined the protesters, which have thus far included a large contingent of SuperSpar employees, calling for bail to be denied.
The movement's chair Ralph Stander said it is time for men to stand up against gender-based violence. "We have had enough of gender-based violence," he said.
A petition has also been circulating on social media and to date, almost a thousand people have signed the petition against bail.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim and the suspect had an argument when the suspect stabbed her with a knife on 7 March. "She sustained a stab wound to the neck and died on the scene. The accused Gevandre Jantjies was later arrested at his residence on a charge of murder," he said.
The deceased's mother Anne Hetjies said she would like Janties – who has been in custody since his arrest on 8 March – to be kept behind bars until the case is concluded.
The bail application was postponed to 12 May.
