KNYSNA NEWS - Vusumzi Gungu (46), who faces charges in connection with the murder of former Knysna mayor and Ward 8 councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court last week in connection with a separate case dating back to 2024.

Gungu's defence attorney, Daan Dercksen, confirmed that his client intends to plead not guilty to the charges against him in both matters. Gungu appeared alone in Court A on Friday 18 September on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, kidnapping and theft of a motor vehicle.

The matter is separate from the case involving Tsengwa's murder, in which Gungu is accused alongside Thobelani Lakhe (39).

According to the charge sheet, the alleged assault, kidnapping and vehicle theft occurred in May 2024. Gungu was arrested and charged on 16 September, more than two years after the alleged incident. The matter was postponed to 26 October after the State informed the court that investigations were still under way, particularly regarding the alleged theft of the motor vehicle.

The court also enquired whether the next appearance would be for a bail application. Dercksen indicated that, should the defence proceed with a bail application on that date, the State would be informed beforehand.

Meanwhile, the murder case against Gungu and Lakhe remains before court. They face charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and three counts of attempted murder. Tsengwa was shot dead in Joodse Kamp, Knysna, on 19 August.

The murder case was postponed to 26 October, when Gungu and Lakhe are expected to return to the Knysna Magistrate's Court. Gungu's stated intention to plead not guilty is a defence position, and all charges remain allegations until proven in court.
