KNYSNA | BITOU NEWS - Nearly one year on from the first known recorded cases of Covid-19 in Knysna, the subdistrict is just shy of 4 800 cases, while Bitou has recorded little over 2 700. Knysna's total number has in fact decreased this week due to cases reallocated to their correct areas, while Bitou has no active cases for the first time in 10 months.
Last Wednesday, 10 March, Knysna's total Covid-19 cases stood on 4 779, but between then and today the Western Cape Department of Health has reallocated certain cases to their correct sub-districts, districts or towns.
This means that as at today, 17 March, Knysna has recorded a total of 4 773 cases of Covid-19, of which 4 594 have recovered, 160 have died, and 19 are active cases.

Due to the reallocation, we are unable to tell how many new cases were recorded this past week, but the deaths have remained the same while active cases have dropped by four. The recovery rate is now 96,25% with the mortality on 3,4%.
In Bitou, a total of 2 717 cases of Covid-19 has been recorded, of which 2 610 are recovered and 107 have died. There are no active cases. The number of new cases this week is only seven, less than half of what was recorded last week (16), but they have all recovered.
The number of deaths is the same once again, with the recovery rate at 96,06% and the mortality rate at 3,9%. The most prominent statistic for Bitou this week, however, is the lack of any active cases. Across all KPH records, it is the first time this has happened in Bitou since 29 May 2020, when there were only 16 total cases of Covid-19 in the sub-district - a significant milestone.
On 18 March 2020, the first cases of Covid-19 became known when Peter Myers and his wife Candace confirmed they’d contracted the virus, meaning we’re a day away from the one-year anniversary of the local pandemic.
This week, you might also notice some new graphs. These paint a better and clearer picture of what the past year of Covid-19 has been like for Knysna and Bitou. Be sure to grab a copy of this week's Knysna-Plett Herald for a more statistical analysis of the past year.
