GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - And another one gone, and another gone, another one bites the dust. No, I'm not talking about another municipal manager at a local municipality.
Instead, I'm referencing yet another year gone by, because somehow we are already at the end of 2022.
It's Christmas time already. Don't ask me how, because even though I like to pretend I know everything, I really couldn't tell you how we are once again in the annual Christmas break.
By now you should have stuffed your stockings to the brim and stacked the prezzies under the Christmas tree, because it's only a few days away.
I know it's been a tough year, but I for one am grateful for the year gone by. Whether you share the same sentiment or not, I encourage you to look back on this year fondly, no matter how hard it is.
Find the positives, no matter how scarce. Look forward with light in your eyes, because there is a lot that lies in wait for us. So cheers to you, for seeing it through.
Speaking of light in our eyes and seeing things through, please remember that we all have to deal with load shedding. Don't complain about hearing generators running in the middle of the night.
For all you know that generator could be running an oxygen supply that is keeping someone's loved one alive. It could be ensuring that a local, small-scale business is able to stay up and running during a time when we all need a bit of extra income. Whether it's 23:00, 04:00 or 14:00, load-shedding affects us all.
Further to this, remember that it is now in-season time. Which means you are bound to hear loud music at some point. This will often come from a live event that is helping sustain our local economy in various forms.
It is also our first post-Covid-19 festive season, and people are more eager than ever to have a good time and a good night out while on holiday. So leave them be.
That being said - partygoers, please party responsibly. Don't drink and drive and don't endanger yourself or others with your actions.
Event organisers, please don't abuse the reasoning I used above, remember this town is still home to tens of thousands of people. There's a sweet spot where everyone can be happy, and let's try keep it there and have a rocking 2022/23 festive season.
This season, please enjoy what our surroundings have to offer you. Whatever it is your soul desires, it lies here. Keep your friends close and your loved ones closer.
Merry Christmas. Geseënde Kersfees. Krismesi emyoli.
For now I say cheers, as it's our final edition of the year. You'll see our paper again on 12 January, but in the meantime you can get your fix of local news online at www.knysnaplettherald.com.
