KNYSNA NEWS - For one weekend, Thesen Harbour Town traded its coastal charm for the irresistible rhythm, flavour and flair of Italy, as the Italian Street Festival brought a colourful Mediterranean buzz to Knysna.
Visitors were swept up in the atmosphere of a bustling piazza where the air was thick with the aroma of wood-fired pizza, slow-roasted porchetta and freshly baked focaccia.
Long tables filled quickly as festivalgoers lingered over good food, fine wine and even better company - embracing the Italian art of slowing down and savouring the moment.
The culinary offering was nothing short of indulgent. From rich spaghetti bolognese and creamy risotto to deli favourites like mortadella, burrata and caprese, every bite delivered an authentic taste of Italy.
Sweet treats proved equally popular, with gelato, tiramisu, cannoli and affogato rounding off the experience in true Italian style.
Complementing the feast was a carefully curated selection of wines, including crisp prosecco and a variety of Italian and locally produced varietals, allowing visitors to sip their way through the country's renowned wine culture.
Beyond the food and drink, the festival offered a full cultural experience. Artisan producers showcased traditional skills and products, while an eye-catching display of Italian cars and motorbikes - from vintage classics to modern icons - celebrated the country's legacy of design and craftsmanship.
The festivities extended into the evening, with a special screening of the acclaimed Italian film La Finestra di Fronte, adding a touch of cinematic romance to the weekend.
With live music, al fresco dining and a lively, sociable atmosphere, the event captured the essence of Italy - warm, expressive and deeply rooted in connection.
The festival also served as a fundraiser for Hospice and Child Welfare, turning a weekend of indulgence into an opportunity to give back. Both organisations received donations throughout the weekend."
The organisers of the Italy in Town: Knysna Street Fest edition said feedback after the weekend's event was overwhelmingly positive, following a vibrant and successful weekend in Knysna. With more than 2000 visitors attending over two days, the festival proved to be a joyful celebration of Italian culture, food, and community spirit.
Chris van der Merwe from RE/MAX Coastal said from the moment the festival opened, visitors were treated to an authentic Italian experience - the aroma of delicious cuisine and a festive atmosphere that catered to both young and old.
"We are incredibly proud of what was achieved this weekend," said Chris van der Merwe from RE/MAX. "The turnout, the energy, and the sense of community exceeded our expectations. It was wonderful to see families, friends, and visitors come together to celebrate all things Italian in such a warm and welcoming environment."
By the time the last plates were cleared and the final glasses raised, one thing was certain: Knysna had not only tasted Italy - it had lived it.
