KNYSNA NEWS - The KnitWits from Knysna helped keep the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day alive by donating beautifully crafted scarves and beanies to the elderly at the Vermont Old Age Home and to children of the Dorothy Broster Child and Youth Care Centre.
The heart-warming gesture was part of the nationwide 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative, which this year also marks the 10th anniversary of the much-loved Secret Scarves campaign.
The colourful scarves and beanies were donated to both organisations on Friday 18 July.
Each winter, the Secret Scarves campaign sees thousands of hand-knitted scarves placed in public spaces across South Africa for anyone in need to take - no questions asked.
This year, the Knysna KnitWits decided to deliver their gifts in person, bringing smiles, warmth and comfort directly to vulnerable members of their own community.
"This is not just knitting - it's about showing love, dignity, and support," said one of the volunteers. "We're proud to be part of a movement that honours Nelson Mandela's legacy through acts of kindness."
The scarves and beanies were all tagged with a message that has become a symbol of the campaign:
"I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me. With love, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day."
