PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Four suspects, including a minor, involved in a break-in at Formosa Primary School on Sunday 21 September were successfully apprehended on Monday, thanks to the swift action of a local fisherman and the ongoing efforts of the New Horizons Taakmag, operating under the Community in Blue Policing (CIB) initiative.
The suspects were allegedly in the process of jumping the school fence at about 04:13 on Sunday morning and throwing stolen food items over it into wheelie bins when a local fisherman passed by, en route to the sea, and noticed the suspicious activity.
Acting quickly, he grabbed the wheelie bins in an attempt to prevent the theft. The suspects fled the scene, but one minor was captured on the spot.
According to New Horizons Taakmag member Clement Titus, he received a call in the early hours alerting him to the break-in.
Over the next 24 hours, the Taakmag followed up on all leads to locate the remaining suspects. Their efforts led to the successful handover of all individuals involved to the Plettenberg Bay SAPS.
The chairperson of the Taakmag team, Morné Bruiners, commended the actions of both the fisherman and his members.
"This is a strong example of what can be achieved when the community takes a stand," said Bruiners. "Our schools are increasingly being targeted, and this incident shows the power of vigilance and teamwork."
Break-ins at local preschools and primary schools have become an all too common occurrence in recent months.
Community members are urged to stay alert, report suspicious activity, and continue supporting local policing initiatives like the CIB.
The Southern Cape Police's spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies, confirmed that the Plettenberg Bay Detectives were investigating a burglary case following the incident.

"The caretaker personnel visited the school at about 08:00 on Sunday 21 September and noticed that the kitchen window was broken. It was later established that the items had been stolen that way," said Spies.
He added that four suspects are in custody and were expected to appear in court today, Thursday 25 September. The investigation continues.
