KNYSNA NEWS - Concerned by a surge in cable and copper pipe thefts that plunged parts of the area into darkness for nearly two days, Hornlee community members have called for urgent intervention from the Knysna Police, Knysna Municipality and other key stakeholders.
One of the most severe incidents involved the dismantling of a substation in Parade Street near Rykmanshoogte.
The sabotage occurred during a blackout and appeared to be a planned operation, raising alarm among residents and authorities alike.
Municipal Spokesperson Christopher Bezuidenhout confirmed that a meeting was held on 19 September between SAPS officials, municipal leadership and community representatives to address the growing threat of infrastructure theft, vandalism and the resulting service disruptions.
Bezuidenhout said Friday's meeting resulted in a commitment to strengthen law enforcement, enhance by-law enforcement and foster improved collaboration.
Despite the residents' concerns, the Southern Cape SAPS's spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies, stated that current police records do not reflect an increase in reported cable theft cases in Hornlee.
"Since April, the SAPS has recorded 12 cases of damage to essential municipal infrastructure in Knysna, including a recent case at Knysna Secondary on 5 September. While nine arrests have been made in connection with these incidents, no suspects have been apprehended in the most recent case," confirmed Spies.

"On 18 September, police on patrol discovered live electrical wires on Shamrock Street, following a cable theft incident in nearby Parade Street - though no formal case was opened there."
Spies assured the public that the police have a zero-tolerance approach in its response to the damage to essential infrastructure.
"Anyone found to be involved will face the full might of the law once arrested. The public is an important part of our operational plan and information should therefore be conveyed promptly," he added.
Authorities urge residents to report infrastructure crimes or suspicious activity by calling 044 302 6608/082 379 3411 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or using the My SAPS app.
