LIFESTYLE NEWS - The month of love isn’t for everyone.
Whether it’s because you’re single or whether you simply scoff at the idea of 'happily ever after', here are eight movies we think can help get you through what’s left of the Month of Love.
While it might seem like all you can find is pro-love movies about how fantastic love is, I can guarantee you there are movies that say the exact opposite.
Our list of eight anti-love movies contains mostly creepy thrillers, but they definitely show the other side of love and how it can go wrong, as opposed to the mainstream idealism of perfect love.
1. The Invitation
Right off the bat, we’ll get into one of the stranger movies on our list. This movie is perfect if you’re looking for proof that your ex is evil.
This thriller is about broken relationships, grief, depression, and how we cope with life-changing events in the modern world. If you’re not patient, you might want to skip this one, as The Invitation is a bit of a slow-burn. However, if you’re a fan of the “dinner party from hell” subgenre, this movie definitely fits the bill.
2. Berlin Syndrome
Have you ever had a one-night stand that you remember with a pinch of regret? Well then you should watch Berlin Syndrome to see how things could have turned out so much worse.
This psychological thriller follows a photojournalist named Clare (Teresa Palmer) who is backpacking across Europe. After she hooks up with seemingly-innocent Andi (Max Riemelt) and spends the night at his, she realises that Andi might have a different outlook on their escapades.
3. How to Be Single
Alright, time to take a breather from all the heavy thriller stuff with a typical Rebel Wilson-esque comedy. How to Be Single is the perfect companion if you're on a path of self-discovery post-relationship.
Newly-single Alice (Dakota Johnson) sets out to experience New York City to its fullest potential. With her wild and adventurous co-worker Robin (Rebel Wilson), she sets off to learn how to put herself above her relationships, one hilarious escapade at a time.
4. Gerald’s Game
They say love can kill you. Gerald’s Game takes this one step further by illustrating how it can kill you, through the depiction of a worst-case scenario during a romantic getaway.
Based upon a Stephen King novel of the same name, this chilling adaptation is stylish, gripping, and definitely intense. Sit down and watch how a passionate roleplaying session turns into a nightmare when one partner injures the other, causing them to have a fatal heart attack. Heads up, this will freak you out.
5 & 6. Kill Bill Volume 1 & 2
Not only do you get to watch two entire films of Uma Thurman's character Beatrix setting out to kill her ex, she also kills his entire squad.
This classic starts with a wedding dress and ends with countless murders, so you know that Quentin Tarantino’s grindhouse favourite means business when it comes to how love can turn harmful and destructive.
Uma Thurman basically kicks and stabs her way through an ex-revenge fantasy, so there’s also that.
7. Gone Girl
The penultimate movie on our list is arguably the one that’ll have you racking your brain the most throughout the film.
Another crucial thing to remember is that love kills. Gone Girl explores not only how men can be lame, carnally driven losers, but that women can be psychopaths, so it’s an equal-opportunity indictment of human beings and the idea that they can enter into partnerships.
Heads up, this will freak you out too.
8. Get Out
Arguably the creepiest and down-right scary movie on this list, Jordan Peele’s movie is one of the best horror films ever released (in my humble opinion).
If you’re just not having it with romantic love this Valentine’s Day, Get Out will remind you that sometimes it’s okay not to get too invested in a relationship (because your partner could turn out to be a honey trap for a body-stealing operation).
Also, it reminds you that you never quite know everything about someone.
Well there you have it, this is our list of eight anti-love movies to help get you through the last few days of the month of love.
So, sit down, get that popcorn going, and enjoy disliking the idea of love.
