It was a most amazing experience for these youngsters. Many of the children were giggling with excitement while a few others were silent, nervous or awestruck. "All left deeply impressed by their encounter, not just with the massive, beautiful elephants, but by the enormous love shown to them by the Oakhill family. Rondevlei, in return, has so much love for Oakhill," says Shaw Hipsher, teacher at Oakhill School. The highlight of the day for these youngsters was feeding the gentle giants.
Hipsher says, "As Samuel Richards once wrote, ‘Love will draw an elephant through a key-hole’. So has love drawn these two schools and a herd of 12 elephants together, and it was such a blessing to be part of it."
Several Oakhill mothers donated cupcakes, hot dogs and drinks to the children. The learners also received packages filled with treats from Woolworths in Knysna.
Johanna Saayman, principal of Rondevlei Primary School, would like to thank everybody from Oakhill School who helped to make the day extra special for the learners. Oakhill School would like to thank Melanie and Greg Vogt for arranging free entrance to the park, as well as Woolworths and all the parents and staff members of Oakhill for making this trip so memorable. "Thank you to everyone who made this a special day for all," concludes Hipsher.
