KNYSNA NEWS - On Friday 18 August, the Knysna Art Society (KAS) visited Nico Liebenberg's pottery studio, where the renowned ceramicist shared his 35-year creative journey.
Nico captivated the audience by highlighting specific pieces and explaining the intricate processes involved in their creation.
Nico is a versatile artist who specialises in crafting porcelain, stoneware, and Raku-fired ceramics, blending elements of Anglo-Oriental styles. His moon jars are true examples of his craftsmanship. Nico's showroom showcases his affinity for traditional Oriental glazes, offering a diverse palette of captivating colours.
His palette includes Caledon tones, vine ash, and Chuns, with brownish-blacks and warm copper reds adding depth and character. Nico achieves these delicate hues through a reduction firing process, where oxygen is removed from the glazes within a gas-fueled kiln.

The general public is encouraged to visit his showroom, where his unique pieces are available for purchase. For those unable to visit during the week, Nico also showcases his works every Saturday at the Mosaic Market in Sedgefield.
The Knysna Art Society organises monthly visits to local artists, providing opportunities for members to engage with and gain inspiration from talented individuals within the community.
Artists interested in opening their studios to KAS members are encouraged to contact Amanda Louw via WhatsApp at 083 256 1960.
