This decision was motivated when it bcame evident that many children in Knysna's townships are under the impression that dogs's purpose is fighting.
This shocking statement was made to a father who chose to remain anonymous, by his four-year-old son who goes to school in Concordia. According to him, the boy asked him why he loves their dog. The father explained that dogs need to be loved, that they have emotions just like people and are God’s creatures. To this the boy responded, “No, daddy, the kids at school say we mustn't love them, they must fight."
Greg Vogt, CEO of Knysna Tourism said that he, Lunchbox Theatre company director Stuart Palmer Knysna Tourism operations manager Johan van Schalkwyk met on Friday, October 31 to discuss the need for an intensive campaign educate school learners about pet care. Through mediums such as the performing arts and literature (including comic books), kids will be taught to cherish their dogs and experience the unconditional love and joy that man’s best friend can bring to their lives.
Vogt said the importance of such an educational campaign was emphasised in the meeting. He hoped that the project will, with the help of sponsors, be sustainable for at least five years, because the children’s mindset must be changed. “This should not be a once-off project, but should be ongoing,” he said
Palmer said that Lunchbox Theatre has years of experience in educational projects for school learners and that he is very excited to start rehearsals on this very necessary project.
