KNYSNA NEWS - After the latest unrest in Nekkies turned violent and left motorists stuck in traffic for hours, the police have increased their presence in the area.
On Saturday, August 26 the third protest in the area in less than a month took place when stone throwing protesters gathered on the N2 at about 16:15 and blocked the road with burning tyres and debris.
Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said on Wednesday 6 September that the public order police unit (POP) from George has been monitoring the situation, and patrol the area at night.
He said no further arrests have been made after a 31-year-old suspect was arrested during the protest, but subsequently released due to a lack of evidence.
Truck burns
In an unrelated incident near this infamous stretch of the highway on Monday, a truck caught fire near the bakery heading to Hornlee.
The Knysna Fire Department responded to a call at about 17:50 that evening and the flames were put out. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
