KNYSNA NEWS - Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor Elmarie Maxim has been reappointed to the mayoral committee (mayco) of Knysna Municipality as the chairperson of the community services portfolio.
Her appointment came roughly a week after a former member of the mayoral committee (MMC) and Patriotic Alliance (PA) Councillor Waleed Grootboom resigned from the position.
When the mayco was first announced in December 2021, Maxim was originally in charge of the community services portfolio.
In February, around the time that the DA and PA entered into coalition agreements, Grootboom replaced Maxim as MMC.
According to a municipal statement on social media, Knysna Mayor Levael Davis confirmed that he received Grootboom's resignation on 28 April.
"I would like to thank Cllr Grootboom for his positive contributions to the mayoral committee and for serving the greater Knysna people with passion. I wish him well with his tenure in Council," Davis said.
It would seem the mayco is ever the example of political gamesmanship, as Grootboom's resignation came only a day after PA president Gayton Mackenzie threatened to withdraw from all coalition deals with the DA.
It is however unclear yet whether or not the coalition between the DA and PA in Knysna has dissolved.
Maxim's reappointment to the mayco was officially announced on 4 May.
