PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay's iconic bronze dolphins - a large sculpture that adorns the traffic circle in the town's Main Street, recently came of age.
The famous sculpture, painstakingly created by renowned local sculptor Robbie Leggat of Bronze Fields Foundery, was unveiled 21 years ago on 16 December 2000.
Since then, it has become synonymous with many visitors' arrival in town as the sculpture indicates the first glimpse of Plettenberg Bay's breathtaking ocean view as one enters the town from Marine Way.
Leggat remembers fondly how he sculpted the statue outside his mother's home in Plett. "I made the statue under a tree on the Robberg Coastal Corridor overlooking the sea," Leggat recalled.
"It was then cast in bronze in Cape Town, before returning to Plett to be erected in the centre of the roundabout in Main Street."
This is now widely regarded as The Dolphin Circle.
Early on the morning of 15 December 2000, Leggat towed the statue to the site on an open trailer behind a small bakkie and erected it in the centre of the traffic circle in preparation for unveiling the next day.
Municipal Manager at the time, Euan Wildeman, arranged a cherry picker to assist in unveiling the statue the next evening.
A meter-high replica of the statue was auctioned off and the proceeds of the fundraiser went into donating the full-size statue to the town of Plett.
"The children from the Masizame Children's Home helped to polish the statue one year, which was great fun," Leggat said.
