PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay's golden girl Leolin Petersen is paving her way to the world gymnastics championships in Japan in November with more medals, after raking in several during a recent gymnastics series.
The 13-year-old gymnast recently participated in the final leg of the Madiba Cup series and managed to claim two gold medals for Euro trampoline and tumbling, and a silver for double mini.
She also received three trophies – one for each category.
The series saw young gymnasts from across the country participate in three events throughout the year in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and the final leg in George two weeks ago. This brings her one step closer to realising her dream of participating internationally for the first time, at the International Federation of Gymnastics Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships after she was chosen to represent South Africa at the event in Tokyo, Japan in November.
The youngster's mother, Helen Bezuidenhout, said her preparation is going well and so is raising funds for this trip. Leolin, who has already proven her mettle on home turf by raking up many gymnastics titles over the years, needs R45 000 to make it to the competition. Bezuidenhout said thanks to the wonderful support from, among others, the Plett community, this amount has shrunk to only R4 000 still needed to cover her costs for the trip. However, it excludes her clothing bill, lunch, supper and pocket money during her time there.
Some of her family's fundraising initiatives have included her mother baking copious amounts of hertzoggies, selling other food, a quiz evening and a Golden Oldies evening at the New Horizons Community Hall.
