PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A recent crime report back meeting between various crime fighters in Bitou, revealed that while most crimes have decreased slightly, a concerning trend has emerged with most burglaries occurring while residents are at home.
Bitou police reported a decrease in most crimes, but highlighted the fact that most burglaries happened during the night when residents were home. Less than two weeks ago this became a reality for a Plett couple.
At about 03:00 on Friday morning, 18 August, two suspects pried open burglar bars and entered a home in Langdown Street while the residents were sleeping.
"It is believed that the couple were disturbed by a noise and upon checking, were faced by two suspects armed with knives. The couple remained calm and did not oppose or anger the suspects who proceeded to grab what they could before leaving the scene.
"This is concerning as these criminals may have tools and weapons to gain entry, and any type of confrontation could lead to injuries and violence. It is therefore imperative that you protect yourself and your family by preventing any unauthorised entrance into your house," says Lisa Nagel of Plett.Watch, local neighbourhood watch group.
She added that one way that suspects entered homes was by lifting sliding doors off their tracks. "It would be prudent to install an anti-lifter on all sliding doors."
