The seven Bibles were recently donated by the Bible Association of South Africa and presented to APD social worker Angelique de Jager by Eden District Municipality’s Councillor Henry McCombi (portfolio chairperson: Management Services).
The Bibles will be distributed by the George-based APD office to visually impaired persons residing in the Eden district.
At the handover, McCombi said that the Bibles supported Eden’s commitment to include and recognise the visually impaired in all activities that concern them. "We hope to continue until we make the difference and impact that people living with disabilities are hoping for,” he said.
After receiving the Bibles, a grateful De Jager highlighted the importance of a partnership with the Eden District Municipality. She gave her assurance that the region's most suitable beneficiaries will be identified to receive the Braille Bibles.
According to Eden's manager of Social Development, Melanie Wilson, “This is the first time that Braille Bibles are issued to persons residing within the Eden region.” Last year, Eden also received a cheque to the value of R15 000 from the Western Cape Disaster Management for the production of educational Braille documents for Eden’s visually impaired.
In an effort to improve the lives of people living with disabilities, a workshop to discuss the development of the District Disability Plan was hosted by Eden in collaboration with the Department of Social Development and Department of Local Government on March 5. The APD, one of the major non-governmental role players, was also invited to participate and guide government in terms of disability.

Braille Bibles donated by the Bible Association of South Africa were recently presented to the Association for the Physically Disabled (APD) by the Eden District Municipality. At the event were (from left) Angelique de Jager (APD social worker), Mario Appels (Eden’s coordinator for Gender, Disability, Elderly), Nicole Lemmetjies (Community Development worker), Councillor Henry McCombi, Jo-Ann Booysen (Community Development worker), Melanie Wilson (Eden’s manager of Social Development) and Natalie Mentoor (Community Development worker).
