PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay volunteers rescued a hiker from the Robberg Nature Reserve hiking trail after he suffered exhaustion.
The town's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station commander Marc Rodgers said they received a call for assistance from a family from Humansdorp just before 18:00 on Sunday 9 June. They reported that the father in the group had suffered exhaustion while hiking with his family.
"Our sea rescue craft Leonard Smith and Ray Farnham were launched while CapeNature rangers and NSRI shore crew members responded to the car park to hike to the location," Rodgers said.
On arrival, he said, the father, accompanied by his wife and two daughters, was treated for exhaustion and secured to a Stokes basket stretcher. He was then carried to the NSRI sea rescue craft beached at the The Island.
Rodgers said the man and his wife were transported aboard one of the vessels and taken to the local sea rescue base. His two daughters were accompanied off the trail to the car park and were from there also transported to the base where they were reunited with their parents. No further assistance was required.
Hikers have been urged to familiarise themselves with the terrain and the safety protocol before taking on the trail. A link to this information can be found on www.capenature.co.za
