KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Youth Crime Prevention Desk (KYCPD) had the honour of hosting the first-ever cluster event in Sedgefield on 17 September, following on the extensive roadshow they embarked upon during August with the theme "Men as protectors of women and girl children awareness".
The KYCPD was inspired by the roadshow and wanted to take their outreach to the community a step further, this time under the theme "Combating crime by combining strength and intelligence".
The idea was to get six scholars from each of the 13 stations within the entire Eden cluster, with Knysna sending 20 scholars. Each station had to select three girls and three boys from each high school in their town between the ages of 14 to 16. They were divided into 13 groups and two out of each station formed part of the group.
The scholars had to participate in team building, group work and obstacle course activities to work together, giving the girls and boys each an opportunity to take the lead.
Each activity on the programme was structured to provide a symbolic representation of what we face in life: the group work focused on how scholars can respect each other and handle pressure, taking lead whether male or female; the team building focused on how scholars can work together and change a situation for the better with their peers from different backgrounds; and lastly the obstacle course encouraged them to overcome barriers that they will face in their youth, not giving up and pushing forward.

The KYCPD has encountered many barriers in making this event a success, but at the end of the day they made it and thank the stakeholders as well as members from each corner of the community who came out to assist.
