KNYSNA NEWS - A joint statement by Knysna Municipality and Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) was issued stating that the N2 Knysna was cleared at around 03:30 this morning (4 April).
This was after a truck overturned earlier yesterday, 3 April 2025.
Heading the GRDM Hazmat response team, GRDM Deputy Fire Chief Deon Van Wyk was on the scene for more than 15 hours.
Van Wyk said: "The three containers, have now been safely removed from the scene. It took several hours to do this carefully shortly after the crane and cargo trucks arrived".
Van Wyk also commended Knysna Municipality's firefighters for their exceptional initial response, stating, "The containers with explosives were already heating up when they arrived. They successfully contained the fire, preventing a potentially catastrophic explosion".
"Thank you again for all the role players who worked as a collective to clear the incident," said GRDM Executive Mayor, Andrew Stroebel.
Mayor Stroebel also urges the public to prioritise safety at all times. "Driving while tired can be extremely dangerousl. If you feel fatigued, please take a break, rest, or switch drivers if possible. No destination is worth a life lost."
