KNYSNA NEWS AND VIDEO - Two people died when a truck carrying explosives caught fire after an accident on the N2 at the Belvidere turn-off in Knysna at 04:00 this morning, Thursday 3 April.
The driver of the truck and a passenger died at the scene and a Provincial Emergency Response officer was taken to hospital after inhaling toxic fumes.
Knysna Municipality's Emergency Services rushed to the scene, and managed to extinguish the fire.
Clean-up operations, which includes the removal of the hazardous cargo, are under way, and the N2 has been closed to all traffic on the western side of Knysna from the Rheenendal turn-off and from its eastern side at the Red Bridge turn-off.
The municipality said the truck's cargo "has been isolated and the SAPS explosives unit, along with other relevant role-players, are currently on site".
An emergency Joint Operations Centre had been established at the Knysna Emergency Services station to coordinate the response efforts and manage the incident.
The municipality said motorists should make alternative travel arrangements.
