KNYSNA | PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The number of Covid-19 cases in both Knysna and Bitou is the highest either sub-district has seen this year, reaching levels last seen during the second wave of the pandemic in December 2020.
The data on Covid-19 vaccine registrations in the province is incomplete on the Western Cape Department of Health's vaccine dashboard, and therefore KPH is unable to provide an update on those numbers.
However, the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is in full swing in SA and through the Omicron strain of the virus cases are continuing to rise.
As at Tuesday 28 December, Knysna had recorded a total of 8 993 cases of Covid-19, of which 8 039 have recovered, 259 have died, and 695 are active cases. The number of new cases these past eight days*, 399, is the most Knysna has seen since 17 December 2020. It represents a rise of 33% (+99) in new cases from the week before.
The active cases also increased, rising by 32,89% (+172), with the number also the highest since 17 December 2020. The recovery rate has dropped to 89,39% (90,91% last week), the lowest percentage since 10 August while the mortality rate is 2,9%. The deaths have increased by one.
In Bitou as at Monday, 5 054 Covid-19 cases had been recorded, with 4 442 having recovered, 137 having died, and 475 being active cases. This shows 263 new cases recorded between 20 and 28 December, a 14,85% (+34) increase – the highest number of new cases since 2 December last year. The active cases rose by 12,03% (+51) this week, and is the highest number recorded in Bitou since 9 December 2020.
The recovery rate is now 87,89% (88,29% last week), and the mortality rate is 2,7%. The deaths have remained the same for the eighth week in a row.
*The Knysna-Plett Herald was printed a day earlier last week, and therefore last week's data was collected a day earlier too. This is why the statistics this week reflect an eight-day period instead of the usual seven days.
