BUSINESS NEWS - dotsure.co.za recently donated funds to the Garden Route SPCA to support the sterilisation of 222 pets in Mossel Bay. The initiative helps prevent future stray litters and creates safer neighbourhoods.
Local SPCA sees growing need for support
South Africa faces a significant pet overpopulation challenge. Shelters are stretched, and new litters arrive faster than they can be homed.
“Sterilisation prevents ongoing suffering and reduces the number of unwanted animals in our communities,” says Elize Goosen, branch manager at SPCA Mossel Bay.
“Every sterilisation represents not just one life changed, but also the countless animals that won’t be born into hardship.”
According to Goosen, sterilised pets are generally healthier, less likely to roam or fight, and at a lower risk of certain cancers and infections. It’s an investment in long-term health and wellness.
Why pet sterilisation matters
Spaying or neutering is a humane, effective solution to:
- reduce stray and unwanted pet populations
- lower disease spread
- improve pet behaviour and safety
- lighten the load on local shelters and animal welfare groups.
Just one unsterilised female cat and her offspring can produce up to 370 000 kittens in seven years, showing how quickly populations can escalate without intervention.
Pooling resources for greater impact
Mass animal sterilisation is a large-scale effort requiring skilled vets, anaesthetics, pain medication, equipment and transport. Thanks to donations, big-hearted veterinarians can reach hundreds of pets in underserved areas, providing care to households that may otherwise be unable to afford pet sterilisation costs.
A safer, kinder Garden Route for all
When more pets are sterilised, the whole community benefits:
- Fewer strays on the streets
- Lower risk of bites or accidents
- Healthier animals and reduced disease transmission
- A calmer, kinder environment for children and pets.
Goosen adds: “We want to reach a point where we sterilise more animals than we need to take in. That’s how we break the cycle.”
