He scored a total of 2 226 points on day one and 893 on day two. With fishing rods ready and kayaks geared up, fishermen took to the water on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 March. Stander caught five skipjack tuna, four red roman and one elf (shad).
Excellent weather conditions, friendly fishermen and a well-organised event made it a success. Some started before the sun was up, while others waited until first light.
Every entrant received a T-shirt and a goody bag. Before the day's fishing started, fishermen shared some adrenaline-filled tales of what happened the previous day – from almost being pushed off a kayak by big waves to blisters on their hands. What makes this specific competition so unique is the fact that you can either go out to sea to fish, or stay on the river.
On day one Alan Neate managed to bag 852 points, followed by 490 points on day two, landing him a second place. He caught four skipjack tuna, three elf and one striped bonito.
Alec Liebenberg came in third with two skipjack tuna, two striped bonito and one red roman, which equalled a total of 622 points for both days.
The event received big sponsorship, which included great prizes as well as a lucky draw prize. Johan Potgieter won this draw which consisted of a VanHunks kayak worth R16 500.
The organisers thanked everyone who participated, the NSRI for their assistance, PiliPili Restaurant for hosting the prize-giving, as well as all the sponsors.
