KNYSNA NEWS - Two young local athletes have been excelling on the tennis circuit, reaching the final of the Winelands Grand Prix Tennis South Africa (TSA) tournament held in Paarl from 29 April to 2 May.
Ten year-old Grade 4 learners Keagan Godfrey (Oakhill) and Cruz Newton (Knysna Primary School) train and play under the auspices of Ivan Strydom of the Innovative Generation Tennis Academy (IGTA) at the Knysna Primary tennis courts.
Both have been training with Strydom for the past three years and Newton had already played in four tournament finals prior to the trip to Paarl, while for Godfrey it was his tournament debut.
The tournament saw tennis players from around the province split into two groups. Godfrey and Newton both progressed to the final, making it an all-IGTA affair, where Newton beat Godfrey 4-0 and 4-1.
"These two boys have some serious talent. I am a very proud coach," Strydom said. "Very proud of both of you and it just shows that hard work pays off!" The two also reached the final of the fourth Eden Tennis Mini, where Newton also came out the winner.
