Seventeen-year-old rugby player and captain of her SWD team, Prelene Pegram is on her way to the South African Rugby Union (SARU) Girls u/18 Sevens Tournament held in Port Elizabeth this weekend, July, 18 and 19.
KNYSNA NEWS - Prelene Pegram of Hornlee, Knysna is extremely excited about participating in the South African Rugby Union (SARU) Girls u/18 Sevens Tournament in Port Elizabeth this upcoming weekend, July 18 and 19.
In an interview on Tuesday, July 17, the talented 17-year-old said the rugby bug bit her at the age of 13 when she and her girlfriends started playing against the boys in the neighbourhood. Two years later she started playing rugby for the Titans Women's Rugby Club in Hornlee, where her talents led to an invitation to attend a high performance camp in Cape Town.
Pegram, who normally plays lock in the fifteens game and prop or centre in the sevens tournaments, has also been selected as captain of the SWD Eagirls u/18 team. Captaincy is not new to her, because she was also the captain of the SWD Eagirls u/16 team last year and led her team to a fourth place in the national tournament where she was crowned as Eagirls player of the tournament.
She said that she hoped that she would be able to play professionally like Mathrin Simmers (26), a Springbok women sevens rugby player who resides in Concordia. "She is my rolemodel," said Pegram, who is a Grade 10 learner at Knysna Secondary School. "She is very down to earth, yet a very talented and professional rugby player."
When asked how she coped with injuries in a sport that tends to become rough, she just laughed and said, "One gets used to it."
Her coach, Aschin Klein, is really proud of Pegram and he has big dreams for her. "I would really like her to excel as a rugby player and take part in the 2016 Olympic Games, for instance," he said. According to Klein, Pegram will be well supported this weekend by teammate Monique Smith, who captained the SWD u/16 team in the 2012 season.
"I expect the Eagirls u/18 team to finish either third or fourth, with Western Province winning the title again in a final against the Border girls," Klein said.
