KNYSNA RUGBY NEWS - The last section of the 2018 Titans Women's Rugby Academy Knysna 7s was held this weekend at the Hornlee sports field.
The boys and girls U18, as well as the girls U16 and boys U13 sections were completed. Only one senior ladies team took part as other female teams withdrew late from the event.
Humansdorp Secondary and Parkdene High were the two visiting schools from outside Knysna while Concordia High, Knysna Secondary, Rheenendal No Limits, Fraaisig Primary and Concordia Primary were the local teams taking part in this year's event.
Ladies
The host TWRA were crowned champions by default after withdrawals from other senior female teams. The Titans ladies, however, played two matches against the Concordia U18 boys losing 14-7, and losing 19-14 against Rheenendal No Limits U18 boys, scoring three tries in the two games.

The boys struggled to handle the physicality of the ladies but the lack of speed in the ladies' squad levelled the playing field for the boys.
U13 boys
The Concordia Boys were in very good form and managed to edge out the very spirited and gifted Fraaisig Primary team to win the first-ever boys U13 title. Only Fraaisig Primary and Concordia Primary took part as Hornlee Primary withdrew the day before the tournament. Keanon Andrews from Concordia Primary was named U13 player of the tournament while Chadlin Koen performed well for Fraaisig.
U16 girls
The host TWRA Knysna 1st team who were undefeated on the day rounded up a perfect day in a very close contested final against Humansdorp Secondary who led with about a minute to go 12-10, before the host's speedy winger Tameron Sauer got the ball out wide to run in untouched to score the match winner that gave her team the title and a gold medal. Parkdene High took the bronze by beating the TWRA Knysna 2nd team.
Rozanne George was awarded the U16 player of the tournament.
U18 girls
The George-based team from Parkdene High took an early lead against Humansdorp secondary school leading 21-7. The Humansdorp girls fought back in the last quarter of the final but a missed conversion allowed Parkdene to edge them in the final with 21-19 to become the new champions. TWRA-Knysna team finished third to collect the bronze medal.
Shaunique from Humansdorp was crowned the U18 girls player of the tournament.
U18 boys
The Hornlee locals, Knysna Secondary School (KSS Loeries), were in destructive form throughout the tournament finishing undefeated, but they were held to a close and exciting final match by Rheenendal No Limits team.
The KSS Loeries led halftime 14-0 and started the second half with an early try but the Rheenendal No Limits team started a fight back and scored two quick tries to cut the lead to 7 points. The experienced KSS team managed to turn over possession late in the second half to secure victory with a beautiful try.
KSS team captain Elrico Wynand was awarded U18 boys player of the tournament award. Concordia High finished third and collected the bronze medal.
The Titans Women's Rugby Academy would like to thank Virgil Kortje from Knysna Municipality's Sports Desk for his assistance and backing of the 2018 TWRA Knysna 7s as well as all the teams who took part in this year's event.
