KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Yacht Club welcomed sailors from the Garden Route and beyond for the recent Interclub Regatta that saw 48 competitors taking to the water.
Teams representing George Lakes Yacht Club, Mossel Bay Sailing Club and East London Yacht Club joined the host club’s fleet on the estuary, fielding a combined fleet of dinghies and catamarans.
Testing conditions on the water
On the Saturday, the racing proved as much a test of patience as of skill. After a prolonged wait for wind, only a single race could be completed, with several boats requiring assistance back to shore as the breeze dropped off.
The slow fleet, however, managed to capitalise on the limited conditions, with 16 sailors completing the race in a closely fought contest.
Off the water, the mood lifted as sailors and supporters gathered on the club’s newly completed deck, enjoying live entertainment and a striking Knysna sunset.
Sunday brought mirror-like conditions on the estuary, prompting the race committee to improvise with onshore tug-of-war and paddle races to keep spirits high, particularly among junior sailors.
Their enthusiasm was rewarded when a light breeze returned in the early afternoon, allowing three short but tactical races to be completed.
Across the two days, four races were sailed in total.
Youth sailors make their mark
In the individual standings, Martin Fraser (KYC) claimed top honours in the catamaran fleet. Arthur Watson (GLYC) led the slow fleet, followed by Cameron Simpson (GLYC) and Eli Kruger-Green (KYC). The fast fleet was won by Olivia Watton (GLYC), with Luca Lutolf (KYC) second and Oliver Holden (South African sailor MBSC) third.
In the overall club standings, George Lakes Yacht Club secured victory in the fast fleet ahead of Mossel Bay Sailing Club and Knysna Yacht Club, while the hosts triumphed in the slow fleet, finishing ahead of George Lakes and Mossel Bay.
A standout feature of the regatta was the strong junior presence, with more than half of the 44 sailors classified as youth competitors. Members of the Knysna Sailing School played a decisive role, powering Knysna Yacht Club to victory in the slow fleet standings.
Event organisers credited both competitors and supporters for the success of the regatta, as well as sponsor Ullman Sails South Africa, which provided welcome packs and prizes while actively participating in the weekend’s activities.
Knysna Yacht Club extended its appreciation to visiting clubs and confirmed that the interclub rivalry will resume in November when the teams reconvene at George Lakes Yacht Club.
