KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Montessori School has been at the forefront of promoting the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League in the Eden district since 2014. The Knysna Montessori School is the first school in the Southern Cape to have built a track at their school and have hosted four races to date.
This year they will host the final race in the series for the third year in a row, each year improving and changing their track with funds raised.
The Spur league is about introducing more learners to bikes, encouraging schools to enter as many riders as possible and awarding points for completion of the race. The league runs on the Olympic Cross Country (XCO) lap-racing format whereby participants complete a set number of laps, determined by age category (primary school seven to 13-year-olds and high school 14 to 18-year-olds) on a short mountain bike course.
Lap distances are between 3km and 5km long. Knysna Montessori has been the proud host to one of these events every year since 2014, where it gets to showcase its track to the Eden cycling community.
Knysna Montessori has really done well having come first in the primary school category for two years in a row and being pipped at the post last year by Blanco Primary of George.
The Spur Schools League is successfully growing cycling in Knysna, with Knysna Primary participating for the first time as a team in 2017 and Oakhill entering a team for the first time and hosting two events on their new track this year. It is wonderful to see so many more young riders on bikes in Knysna and the greater Eden district.
Since its beginnings, the Spur MTB league has grown from its initial 900 riders in 2009. This year it has 45 events with entries from 500 schools and has reached an amazing 12 000 riders who participate nationwide.
The first race for the 2018 league has been completed leaving three more races to go: 28 July at Oakhill, 18 August at Oakhill and the final on 15 September at Knysna Montessori.
