ATHLETICS NEWS - Henri Schoeman has denied testing positive for a banned substance, following allegations that he returned an adverse analytical finding during the 2016 Rio Games.
The 26-year-old athlete, who snatched bronze ahead of compatriot Richard Murray at the multi-sport showpiece, said on Wednesday he had been cleared of the allegations.
“After thorough investigation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and International Triathlon Union (ITU), I have received a letter confirming what I have known all along,” Schoeman said in a statement.
“There has never been a positive result, an adverse analytical finding or a necessity for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE).”
According to a report on the Sputnik News website, leaked emails between IOC officials (published by the Fancy Bears hacking group) suggested Schoeman had tested positive for the banned substance prednisolone without obtaining a TUE.
The conclusion made by the officials in the email chain was unclear, however, and there was confusion about how the substance had allegedly been administered.
