The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival 2017 hosted the eighth year of the event. Prior thereto, event manager Picca de Bruin and referee Naomi Meiring visit each centre to work with the groups and select the 10 best players to represent each AD (Associations for Persons with Disabilities) centre.
Ninety participants from nine APD centres within the Eden District were invited to partake in a day of fun. The event was created for both physically and mentally disabled persons.
“We are most grateful to the sponsors, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, as well as Pick n Pay and the support of Worldsport. Unfortunately, seven sets of practice balls were lost, as my home and office were one of the many properties destroyed in the recent fire, but with the help and encouragement of Jenni Liefeldt of Worldsport and the disaster relief fund, we are working on importing replacement sets," said De Bruin.
“Many of the participants got to know each other over the past eight years. In the first rounds the camaraderie is noticeable but when it gets to the final rounds the centres challenge one another for the floating trophy,” De Bruin said.

There was great excitement when she challenged Oom Sias Hartnick from APD Rheenendal.
The day was completed with a visit by the provincial minister of cultural affairs and sport, Anroux Marais. Not only the winners but also each participant was personally congratulated by Marais as she handed them each a medal of participation.
This year the floating trophies went to APD Rheenendal, a proud moment for the centre as it was the first year they participated.
