KNYSNA NEWS - Making her mark in a male dominated sport, possibly punching above her weight, Dunyiswa Mgwele is shining behind the scenes of boxing arenas in the Southern Cape.
The Knysna resident, origninally from Mthatha, proved her mettle as a boxing coach when one of her students recently won a match during the opening of a Mossel Bay boxing ring - part of the Eden district - on 8 March this year.
The qualified pharmacist assistant first started boxing more than a decade ago as she associates boxing with good behaviour, presentation and better living- everything she aspires to be.
She is currently involved in a boxing club at Sinethemba, an organisation that helps take children off the streets. She is also an affiliate of the Eden region and Western Cape boxing and a referee for the province.
The mother of three - a teenager Qhawe,16, two girls Yande,10, and Sibulelo,1, said her biggest challenges are the lack of support from the community and the families of the children she trains. She added that another obstacle was the unavailability of training space.
She said what keeps her going is keeping her students off the streets, seeing them investing in the sport, putting the work in and coming back with medals.
The 33-year-old is determined to further her studies and reach a national level in her boxing career.
