KNYSNA NEWS - Old Oaks Knysna Hockey Club continued its strong start to the 2023 Eden Senior Hockey League season last weekend, with its men's and ladies teams emerging victorious over the sides from Wanderers.
Plett Hockey Club's sides meanwhile were defeated by Crusaders.
Not only was it a rainy weekend with the heavens opening above Knysna on Saturday 13 May, it was rainy on the hockey turf too as goals poured in at the Oakhill Sports Campus where the Wanderers and Old Oaks sides faced off.
Old Oaks' men were hot off a resounding win against Plett the week before and the ladies were hoping to kick-start theirs after a draw the week before, also against Plett.
The men's teams played first and Old Oaks seemed set for another flyer, taking a 4-0 lead going into half-time. They scored a fifth in the third quarter, as Wanderers replied with one of their own, making the score 5-1.
Wanderers showed great resolve in the fourth and final quarter to keep fighting and make Old Oaks work for their win, hitting the backboard a further two times.
They just couldn't do enough though, and Old Oaks ran out 5-3 victors. Old Oaks are now top of the league after the first two games. Old Oaks' goal scorers were Nick Olivier (three), Jacques Potgieter and Essy Agiels.
Next up was the ladies fixture where Old Oaks were a bit slow to get going, leading 2-0 when the whistle blew for half-time.
A dominant third quarter saw them stamp their authority on the game though, but not without Wanderers scoring one of their own, and four Old Oaks goals made the score 6-1.
Old Oaks scored twice more in the fourth quarter to run out 8-1 victors. They are now top of the log too, with the bulk of the teams having only played one game due to postponed fixtures. Old Oaks' goals were scored by Kerrin Klaaste (three), Kara Vermeulen (two), Chanelle Booyens, Marisha Bezuidenhout and Ruby Zimmerman. Wanderers' goal was scored by Karen Schoeman.
Plett meanwhile faced off with Crusaders in George, and it was a tough day for the Plettonians. The Crusaders men ran riot and won 8-0 while the Crusaders ladies mustered a 3-0 triumph over Plett.
