HOCKEY NEWS - New Zealand made it a day to remember on several fronts as they sent a strong message to their rivals with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Malaysia in the FIH Men's Hockey Nations Cup at Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town on Tuesday.
Not only did the Black Sticks book their place in the tournament semifinals, but they also celebrated a number of significant milestones, chief among them being midfielder Aidan Sarikaya earning his 100th international cap.
Alongside him, Charlie Morrison ran out for his 50th appearance for New Zealand, while penalty-corner specialist Kane Russell scored twice to move to 99 international goals, leaving him tantalisingly close to the coveted 100-goal mark.
Reflecting on his achievement, the 29-year-old Sarikaya, who hails from Waikato, described the occasion as "pretty awesome".
Before the match, he was presented with a commemorative gift in recognition of his century of appearances.
"Playing my first game, and then reaching this milestone, is something I will always cherish because I never imagined at the start that I would get to 100 caps," he said.
"I'm from a part of the country where not many players go on to play 100 games for New Zealand, so this was a really special moment."
Capping the occasion was the dominant display the Black Sticks produced against Malaysia.
"We have some guys at the top of the circle who can put the ball in the goal, so winning penalty corners is massive for us," said Sarikaya.
"We're building momentum through this tournament and we're looking forward to keeping that going."

For coach Greg Nicol, it was another step in the right direction as New Zealand chase a third Nations Cup title.
"The control we showed, the way we moved the ball and put them under pressure, I'm very happy with that," he said.
"It felt like we were never going to lose the game, although I would have liked us to score a few more goals.
"We left a few chances out there, but we're heading into the semifinals now and it's good to have that control in the way we move the ball around the park."
The Black Sticks dictated proceedings from the outset. Although it took them some time to find their rhythm, Russell finally broke the deadlock from a penalty corner in the 19th minute.
Dylan Thomas doubled the advantage just two minutes later and, from that point, it became increasingly apparent that Malaysia were in for a difficult afternoon.
Malaysia eventually pulled a goal back through Mohamad Anuar Esook with five minutes remaining, but by then the Black Sticks were firmly in control as they completed another impressive performance on their march into the knockout stages.

In the second fixture, with Jamie Golden scoring a brace, Scotland finally found their best form for a morale-boosting 4-2 win over Korea after suffering three losses in a row.
They withstood extreme pressure as the Koreans fought with intensity late in the game to try to close the gap, something which pleased Scottish captain Robert Field.
“It’s nice to get a win because I feel like in the tournament, we have been getting better and better,” he said.
“It was good today that some things clicked and we were able to score some goals, which was really important.
“We have managed to put together some good defensive performances and that stayed, so now we are looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”
