While many karate clubs focus primarily on teaching kata and fighting, Wessel’s Martial Arts Academy used the camp to focus on teaching children valuable life skills.
The children were divided into different teams of two leaders and children from different ages and karate abilities.
They were given four challenges designed by Sensei Wessel Wilms and Sensei Elrie Bosman to test leadership abilities and teamwork.
The camp was about more than just karate, it was about improving each student’s ability to cope with the challenges life might throw at them, helping introverts interact with the people around them, helping inflated egos to tone it down and work together as a team, teaching respect, humbleness, and an internal strength to never give up.

Knysna and Plett students of Wessel’s Martial Arts Academy, an affiliate to South Africa Goju Ryu Karate-do and Karate-do International, participated in the annual Children’s Beach Gasshuku and Karate Camp over the weekend of February 28 to March 2, with over 50 people from all over the Southern Cape attending.
