KNYSNA NEWS - On 20 August, the Knysna Shotokan Karate Academy participated in the WSKF Free State Shotokan Championships held at the Tempe Indoor Sports Centre in Bloemfontein.
The Knysna team, the Cobras, was made up of six karateka and their coach, sensei Shedwin Arries, was one of a few referees who managed affairs on the competition floor. The Cobras excelled at the tournament and scooped 14 medals: two gold, four silver and eight bronze.
Arries explained that the contest was their first official competition after the restrictions of the national state of disaster were lifted.
"Our students were hungry for competition and worked very hard and patiently in preparation for this tournament.
"The competition was tough and the standard very high, but the Cobras team stood their ground with high performance karate," he said.
"This would not have been possible without the help of Hope for Athletes and the generous donations from Knysna Municipality and Seeff Knysna, as well as the huge financial commitment of each and every parent of these great and special individuals," Arries added.
He said the Knysna Karate Academy focuses on building and developing the character of every student that steps into their dojo. The academy aims to instil a sense of pride in their abilities.
They have an open-door policy where parents are welcome to sit in during practice sessions.
"We also provide our karateka with a safe and friendly environment not only to get physically active, but to make a connection with their peers as well."
