GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - A young Knysna angler dominated at the recent Eden Angling Association's league competition and helped the town remain in the top three in the A, B and C league as they head into the next event this weekend.
On 30 March the association hosted its eighth league competition in Stilbaai, when Triton Angling Club of Mossel Bay came out on top after the day's angling.
The fishermen got together at the Stilbaai Clubhouse and fished between 07:00 and 15:00. During this period the biggest inedible fish was pulled out by George's Ruben Gouws. He managed to catch a bull ray weighing 50.52kg.
The biggest edible fish was caught by Triton's Chris Ferreira – a 37.66kg kabeljou.
Top angler was Gouws who garnered 91.25 points. The best female angler of the competition was Lena Croje of Stilbaai with 15.73 points.
U16 top spot
Michael Buchle of Knysna took the top spot in the U16 division gathering 25.35 points while Triton Club's Luan Els won the U21 category with 31.72 points.
The top master of the day was Henry McKay from Atlantic Angling Club with 24.30 points and Rene Cronje from Stilbaai secured the win in the grandmaster division with 18.09 points.
After scores were added it came to light that Stillbaai was in the top spot in the overall A league standings with 968.51 points, followed by Knysna (858.93) and Outeniqua (851.31) second and third respectively.
In the B league, Stillbaai also took the lead with 595.19 points, with Triton and Knysna taking the final podium spots.
In the C league, George is currently comfortably in the lead with 264.93 with their closest competitor, Knysna, only on 94.34 points and Outeniqua on 94.17.
The next competition will take place in Wilderness on Saturday 13 April.
Eden triumphs
Between 18 and 22 March, the National B Angling and Development Championships took place in Eden.
Of the nine provinces that participated, Eden B succeeded to out-angle the competition to win gold during the tournament. The top angler of the tournament was Alex Schmidt who, along with Andre Grundling made it into the president's team in the B division.
The top angler in the development team was Eden's John May, who was also chosen to be part of the development president's team. The development team also managed to secure a bronze medal during the competition.
