RHEENENDAL NEWS - A dream is coming true for 15-year-old Joshua Quina, a young karateka from Rheenendal, who will be representing team South Africa at the World Karate Championships in Japan on 22 September.
"It was an overwhelmingly good feeling, knowing my hard work paid off," says Joshua.
He began practising Shotokan karate at the age of nine, inspired by the film The Karate Kid.
What started as childhood curiosity has grown into disciplined passion. Now a red belt, Joshua trains diligently every Monday and Wednesday, and attends extra squad training every Saturday in preparation for the world stage.
Despite financial and logisti-cal challenges including late taxi services to Rheenendal and tight academic schedules, Joshua has remained focused.
"There were times my mom couldn't come to competitions, but my grandparents stepped in. My family's support has been everything."
Shotokan karate has taught Joshua more than physical technique, he says. "It's a way of life. It teaches respect, discipline, and humility."
His role model, sensei John Peach, has guided him beyond the dojo, shaping his character and commitment.
Joshua's dream doesn't end in Japan. "I want to become a black belt, not just to earn the rank, but to teach other kids in my community the values karate instils."
As he prepares for his first international trip, Joshua hopes to inspire others. "No matter your background, never give up. Even if no one claps for you, be your biggest cheerleader."
Joshua still needs to raise R12 000 to cover the remaining costs of his trip to Japan. Anyone wishing to support his journey can contact his mother, Jonique Quina, on 060 827 6413.
