KNYSNA NEWS - After its sponsors withdrew for the 2024 event, others stepped in and the Harbour2Heads canoe race went ahead and a drew a record field.
An under-15 guppie race of 4km was held before the main two races of 12km and 24km, comprising one and two laps of the course respectively.
The main races were open to both K1 or K2 boats, with K1 given preference in the prizes as Canoeing 2024 is a K1 year, with this designation alternating every year.
"The event was very successfully held on Sunday the 30th June, being part of the Knysna Oyster Festival," Michael Jacobs, the organiser, said.
Prize categories were divided into age groups, from under-19 Juniors to Grand Masters, a 60 to 69 age category.
"Categories are in 10-year increments and include Ladies and a K2 mixed double category," he said.
"Start time was 10.00 and we were fortunate to have good weather and calm waters.
"Tom Lovemore of Knysna was the overall winner in the K1 category and was presented with the floating trophy which is made from a 120-year-old ship's lantern."
He said after the 2023 sponsors withdrew from the 2024 event, "new sponsors had to be approached. This was successfully achieved with Vision Yachts committing as the title sponsor, along with Fusion power boats, Engel & Völkers and Lombkor as co-sponsors".
