Update
PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plettenberg Bay gymnastics star Leolin Petersen has shown once again why she has the Midas touch after winning double gold at the South African Gym Games this week.
The 18-year-old Petersen recently qualified for the biggest gymnastics gathering in the country, the SA Gym Games.
The event started on 19 September and will end on 29 September, at the Western Cape Sports School and Wynberg Sports Complex.
She participated in the first two days and proved her mettle by winning two gold medals and a silver.
She managed to secure gold in two categories: double-mini and Euro trampoline. Her silver medal was for tumbling.
This showing was not only thanks to countless hours of training, but also the helping hand of the Plettenberg Bay community.
As with many such events, athletes have to pay their own way in terms of travel and other expenses. To help her, Leolin's mother, Helen Bezuidenhout jumped in and started baking up a storm to give her daughter the opportunity to participate.
Hertzoggies
Bezuidenhout is known in her community for her culinary prowess, especially her Hertzoggies - a sweet jam-filled treat. Bezuidenhout baked and sold these delectable bites to raise funds for her daughter.
Leolin is one of 26 gymnasts from Mandy's School of Tumbling and Trampoline who qualified for the event.
The Plettenberg Bay Primary School alumnus, who now lives in Gqeberha to be closer to her coaches, represented the Eastern Cape at the event, in which the country's top gymnasts are competing.
