KNYSNA CYCLING NEWS - A Knysna Sport Academy member, Damon Terblanche, earned himself an age-group podium finish at the Meiringspoort Challenge on Monday 27 May.
The 18-year-old started cycling only three years ago and has taken to the sport as if he was born on the saddle of a bicycle.
His most recent success came at the 61.5km mountain bike race that takes participants around parts of the beautifully dry and arid Klein Karoo.
The circle route starts at the NG Church grounds in De Rust, after which riders pass through the farms and Klein Karoo countryside. The best part of the route is undoubtedly the full circle around the well-known Stompdrift Dam, at the foot of the astonishing Kammanasie Mountain.
Thereafter cyclists pass through a game farm where eland and kudu could lie in wait under a huge tree. After an unforgettable adventure and three well-equipped water points, cyclists find themselves back in De Rust for a good rest.
Damon didn't venture to the Klein Karoo simply for the views and to enjoy the countryside however – he climbed onto his saddle in De Rust as a man on a mission and finished in a time of 03:01:26 to finish 22nd overall, and second in his category (juniors).
